Back to overview

Keeping up with all the regulations can be challenging—from OSNMA to data retention, and soon the Smart Tacho 2 for LCVs.

That’s why we’ve put together everything you need to know so you’re fully prepared for the new year. Start 2026 worry-free and compliant!

Check the 3 most important regulations and see if you’re ready to drive

1. OSNMA is now operational

On July 24, 2025, the EU officially declared Galileo OSNMA operational. OSNMA enables authentication of GNSS messages to detect and prevent spoofing and tampering.

Following the OSNMA service declaration, there’s a five-month period: from December 24, 2025, all newly registered vehicles falling under the regulation must be equipped with a Smart Tacho 2 with activated OSNMA (often called G2V2A). Transition ST2 units registered before that date do not need to be upgraded.

2. Stricter data recording requirements

While the rules for downloading tachograph data are not new, enforcement is becoming stricter, and compliance checks are more thorough.

  • For international trips, drivers must provide 56 days of tachograph data, both within the EU and between the EU and the UK.
  • Download intervals:
    • Vehicle unit: at least every 90 days
    • Driver card: every 28 days, and immediately upon termination of employment, or in case of damage or loss
  • Calibration: every two years, and after major repairs, modifications, or parameter changes

3. Coming in 2026: Smart Tacho 2 mandatory for LCVs

From July 1, 2026, vans and light commercial vehicles weighing 2.5 tons or more involved in international transport must be equipped with a Smart Tacho 2.

Start inventorying and booking now to avoid workshop bottlenecks. Waiting too long can lead to high fines, operational delays, frustrated drivers, and falling behind competitors who are already prepared.

But are all these updates driver-friendly?

Regulations often feel like an extra burden to drivers. New requirements are quickly seen as more paperwork or restrictions. At Stoneridge, we take this into account: our regulatory solutions are designed not only for fleet managers and compliance officers but also to make drivers’ daily work easier and safer.
