The SE5000 Smart 2 tachograph has a GNSS function that automatically records when national borders are crossed without any action being required on the part of the driver. The tachograph has an integrated Bluetooth/ITS interface, which gives drivers control over their personal data and allows external devices such as smartphones to access the tachograph for downloading data.

Here at Stoneridge, we understand that service centers need to prepare for the mandatory retrofitting of tachographs by the end of 2024 at the latest. We will be providing training and support for our Optimo² UGC functionality which helps service center engineers to collect, exchange and reuse required configurations for the retrofit. Our Optimo² tool also provides regular software updates and is compatible with Smart 2 tachographs from version 7.0 onwards.

Main tachograph symbols and meanings

There are a number of tachograph symbols that come up often and whose definition you need to know when working with tachographs.

  1. Driving: Represented by a steering wheel, this symbol is used when the driver is operating the vehicle.
  2. Other Work: Depicted as work tools, this symbol is for activities other than driving, such as loading or unloading.
  3. Break/Rest: Represented by a chair or bed, this symbol indicates designated breaks or daily rest periods.
  4. Availability: Shown as a square with a diagonal line, this is for periods when the driver is on standby but not working.
  5. Maintenance Warnings: Indicate when the tachograph requires service or calibration.
  6. Error Symbols: Highlight issues such as card malfunctions or incomplete data.
  7. Ferry/Train Crossing: This indicates when a driver is traveling by train or boat. To the UK or to Sweden, for example. This movement is recorded, and the driver can move the vehicle (on the boat, off the train, etc.) without this taking away from his rest time.
